One of the most controversial applications of blogging technology is that blogs contain news stories as they unfold. One of the reasons that people are attracted to the blogosphere is that it is possible to update a blog instantaneously. The news on blogs has a tendency to be more current and more real than the news that appears in the paper on or on television. All someone has to do is go to the various blog directories and search for news terms that they are interested in and they will find a collection of blogs posting relevant articles to the topic. News that appears on blogs does not have to pass through the hands of a series of editors and administrators before it reaches the public eye. This has some advantages, but it also has some disadvantages. An example of a notable case of news hitting a blog before it appeared in other media took place in July 2005, when the terrorists struck London. As the passengers were being evacuated from a subway car near the explosion, a man took a series of photographs with his cell phone. Within an hour these images were posted on-line. Then, first person accounts of this horrible catastrophe started to appear on blogs soon after the photos. People all around the world were reading the words and looking at the photos posted by bloggers. People are drawn to blogs because they are looking for more information than just the information provided on television and mainstream media websites. Since these stories and photos were being spread by individuals without the filter of editors or a reporter, people could feel the immediacy of the situation. Also, when it comes to blogging the news is often very personal. People speak in a straightforward tone. People also like the variety of the voices from the bloggesr. Blogs can be edgy and provide strong opinions. Many consider this to be the new era of reporting. The power of reporting news is being transferring into the hands of the public through blogging. Bloggers and cultural commentators are champions of the weblog movement. They feel that this trend of people getting their news from blogs is great, because it makes the flow of information democratic rather than controlled. The decentralization of news control allows more voices to enter current event debates. There are some important things to consider about the use of blogs as news outlets. Unlike newspapers and televisions stations, bloggers generally have no journalistic accountability. Blogs can also cause the rapid dispersion of misinformation. It is a fact that more than one false story has permeated the blogosphere. Regardless of whether you are for or against getting your news from blogs, you have to agree that the blogging movement is revolutionizing the flow of information in the world. God bless you.
